Porter's Birth Story

November 10, 2015 No Comments

I’ve avoided recounting this story in my head from start to finish as best I could for the past two years. But as my impending due date moves closer and closer, thinking about my first and only experience giving birth seems to be unavoidable. Fair warning, this is not a beautiful birth story. I had flashbacks and woke up in complete hysterics for months after bringing Porter into this world. A little background – Porter was measuring large, particularly his head, and…

Hearty Spaghetti Sauce

October 6, 2015 No Comments

The weather is FINALLY starting to cool down around here, and people are rushing up to Apple Hill to partake in all of its fall themed glory (apple picking, pumpkin patches, wine tasting and other fall crap). Fall is here! For the greater Sacramento region, cooling down means it’s 80 degrees instead of 90 or higher, but I’ll take it! I’m tenaciously embracing fall, despite the fact that I can’t dress the part without sweating profusely, and I decided it was time…

Chicken Enchiladas with White Sauce

August 17, 2015 No Comments

Growing up, I HATED enchiladas. It wasn’t until I got older that I discovered I have a cumin allergy, so that explained it. Once I tried my friend Hailey’s enchiladas that were cumin free, I had a change of heart. At that point on, I began making my own version of chicken enchiladas, adding ingredients and tweaking things as I go. Enough people have asked me for this recipe, to which my reply was always, “Sorry, it’s in my head but I’m going to…

I Lost My Two Year Old

August 11, 2015 No Comments

That moment we as parents fear the most. You hear about it, but hope will never happen to you. That moment you look around at a store, park, mall, beach – WHEREVER – and you suddenly realize you don’t see your child. You are immediately consumed with shear terror. With tears streaming down your face, your blood pressure sky rocketing into panic mode, you start asking if anyone has seen your child. You provide a brief description. He’s two, has light hair…

The Right Way to Roast Chickpeas

June 15, 2015 No Comments

Only the best snack you will ever have in your life that can replace a craving for something salty and carby, like chips or something – and the best part is, you can make this snack salty AND spicy by adding lots of cayenne pepper! I’ve seen variations of this recipe pop up here and there on my Pinterest and Instagram, but I’ve found they’re never quite right (in my opinion). I started making this snack before it was a thing, when…

Five Make-up Faves

June 12, 2015 No Comments

I love make-up. I’ve never had the type of skin where I just look perfect completely make-up free (super jealous of people like that). I’ve been a make-up hoarder/consumer/lover since the sixth grade (is that too early? Haha) and I’m thirty now, so I’ve had some years to try tons of different brands and products. Obviously my make-up preferences evolve and change as I age, but I thought I’d just share five of my top (for now) faves. Make-up Forever concealer. This…

Kale salad with meyer lemon vinaigrette

April 10, 2015 No Comments

I’m the worst blogger ever, I know. I’ve been so caught up in being a mom/wife/daughter/friend/cook/maid/gardener/PR freelancer, that I’ve really dropped the ball on this blog, which is annoying (I’m annoyed at myself) because I’d like to be able to add “/amateur writer” — but I can’t and it’s my own fault. However, it’s a new day and Porter is napping, so I thought I’d get back on the blog horse. Cooking is something I’ve always enjoyed – my passion began as a little girl helping…

When I started this blog, I decided I was not going to stick to any sort of a publishing schedule because to me (at the time) it felt too calculated/disingenuous. One of my goals in starting this blog was to keep it 100 percent authentic, so forcing myself to write x times per week/month regardless of whether I felt inspired to do so didn’t seem like the right way to accomplish that. With that being said, I’m disappointed that I’ve been on…

  • Had the best Sunday celebrating the birthday twins 👯 🎂 Today @ktrec and tomorrow, @laurenerickson1027. I’m sure glad these two babes were born 34 years ago...these girls are my sunshine on a cloudy day ❤️ ⛅️ swipe for some major throwbacks ➡️
  • Fridays are for flashbacks, so here I am 26 years young after I had just said my vows to the love of my life @ryancurtismitchell. My bouquet was so heavy, my forearms were sore for days afterwards 💐🏋🏻‍♀️😂
  • “The days are long but the years are short”
💫
Today I’ve been reflecting a little bit on time as we approach the year 2019; just one year shy of the year 2020, which kind of boggles my mind when I sit and really think about it. 💫
How has it really been that long? I had Porter in 2013 when I was 28 years old and in so many ways it feels like yesterday. How am I in my mid thirties already? How was college graduation literally 11.5 years ago? How is it that Ryan and I have been together for 10 years and married for 6? 💫
My 92 year old grandmother often tells me she doesn’t feel 92 and I’m really starting to understand. I guess all we can do in this life is appreciate every moment because in a blink of an eye, we will wonder how that said moment was so long ago. 💫
This also makes me think about how life is too short to spend time with negative people or drink bad wine. And also I need to get some Botox. 😂🍷💉
  • I graduated from high school in 2003, so I vividly remember the days of film/photo albums. As digital cameras and social media took over, printing photos became kind of a rare thing for me to do. I’ve had so many scares where I think digital photos have been lost forever and I personally know people who have tragically lost precious baby/wedding photos 😭. So when I got the opportunity to partner up with @google using Google Photos, I was intrigued! On my phone and within literally FIVE minutes, I was able to create this album of our trip to Maui from over the summer. It was the easiest thing ever using the Google Photos app, cost about $20, and they have free standard shipping until 12/12! This album has already been a coffee table conversation piece and my kids have been fondly reminiscing our trip 😍. My new normal is definitely to have Google Photo albums! These are also awesome Christmas gifts 🎁🤩#googlephotos #photobooks #googlepartner
  • Christmas magic through their eyes ✨🎄🎅🏻
  • Yesterday we had our first parent-teacher conference for TK and it turned out to be much more thorough than I would have imagined. It was so amazing to hear feedback from his teacher about this boy we’ve been trying to mold & raise for the past 5 years. So many things said about him that made me just beam with pride, but the most profound praise was that he exhibits an unusual sense of empathy and compassion for others. If there was any one trait in this world I could hope for my kids to have, it would be that❤️ #portercurtis
  • Porter: I wish it was Saturday.
.
Me: Why?
.
Porter: So I can be here and do hugs with you all day.
.
Porter said this to me as I was hugging him. He went from driving me crazy (arguing with basically everything I say all day, urrrday) to making me cry with his sweet words. Hello emotional roller coaster 🤪😭😍❤️
  • When you rush into your toddler’s room because of the silence and find this 🤷🏻‍♀️. I don’t even know who you are anymore Presto 😂 #prestonhenry #thisistwo
  • Thankful for these goofs today and everyday 💙💙 #porterandprestonm #builtinbestfriend @dianaelenaphotos
